The EU AI Act is the first of its kind, and a blueprint for the rest of the world on regulating AI systems. This law, governing AI in the European Union, ensures these systems are developed and used in a way that protects fundamental rights like privacy and non-discrimination. For example, it's not always possible to find out why an AI system has made a decision or prediction and taken a particular action. It makes it difficult to assess whether someone has been unfairly disadvantaged, like in a hiring process or an application for a public benefit scheme. While most AI systems pose limited risk and can contribute to solving many societal challenges, some AI systems produce undesirable outcomes. 

The EU AI Act lays the groundwork for a responsible and ethical AI environment with some strict rules for transparency and accountability. While this law will only be applicable within the EU market (for now), we can be sure that similar legislation will roll out across the globe in time. 

Why should you care about the EU AI Act? 

The EU AI Act focuses on categorizing AI systems deployed and used in the EU according to their risk levels.  

These systems will be assessed and deemed to be either minimal, limited, high, or unacceptable risk. Importantly, the Act also highlights the need for AI awareness and literacy. By spelling out clear rules and expectations, it's pushing companies to invest in training and education for their teams. This is particularly important for HR and L&D leaders, who must ensure their workforce can understand and apply ethical AI practices.  

Article 4 of Chapter 1 makes it clear that employee training should be a priority for all businesses. This isn't just about following the law — it's about building a workforce that truly gets the ethical and technical ins and outs of AI. And that's a big deal for creating a future where AI is a force for good. By following the Act, you can prove to key stakeholders that your organization is approaching AI use ethically. You’re building trust with transparency and accountability. 

The consequences of non-compliance with the EU AI Act are significant. Businesses that fail to meet the Act’s requirements could face reputational damage and fines of up to €35 million or 7% of global annual turnover, whichever is higher. So, here’s the bottom line: By getting ahead of the game and making compliance a priority, you’re not just avoiding risks but also reaping the rewards of being a responsible innovator.

While it's important to get your team up to speed on the EU AI Act, the new law doesn't outline what exactly this means. It asks employers to ensure adequate 'AI literacy' for employees, but with no specifics on required training.

In our final webinar for 2024, we spoke to several experts in AI adoption and social change about the impact of this emerging technology. How will AI affect individuals and businesses? , How can we harness its power to boost human creativity and innovation? We welcomed Dr. Cornelia Walther, Humanitarian Leader, Author, and Director of POZE, Scott Province, VP of Integrated Learning Services, at ELB Learning, and Nikki Lee, Head of Impact Evaluation, Assessment, and Research at Google, to a conversation moderated by Josh Penzell, VP of AI Innovation and Strategy, at ELB Learning.  

Throughout the conversation, one theme became abundantly clear — as we explore the potential of generative AI, it’s important to remember that this technology isn’t something to be afraid of. It’s a tool that can help us unlock our unique human potential and create a future based on equity. 

Using AI for human uniqueness and creativity 

The rise of AI technologies presents an opportunity to boost human capabilities rather than replace them. Gen AI isn't here to supplant human ingenuity but to amplify it and help us unlock more of our human qualities. Dr. Cornelia Walther proposed, “Rather than using AI to do more at lower cost, think about what makes you unique and where AI can now help you to do more of that very specific stuff that makes you stand out.” Integrating AI into our workflows allows us to leverage its computational power and data-processing abilities to free up time for more creative and strategic thinking. AI is great at recognizing patterns and crunching data, but it can’t replace human intuition, empathy, and understanding.  

By letting AI take over the more repetitive, data-driven tasks, we can focus on the work that requires our uniquely human skills — like critical thinking and creativity. This way, we’re not only more efficient, but the work we do is more fulfilling. 

Integrating Gen AI into employee development 

The potential of Gen AI in employee development is nothing short of transformative. Think of the traditional training methods we've all encountered — the one-size-fits-all approach that often misses the mark for individuals with their own learning preferences and needs. Now, imagine a shift to personalized learning paths, each finely tuned to an employee's unique goals or skill gaps.  

“There's a lot that's being done with machine learning and AI these days that can observe and evaluate how you're doing, then provide you hints, additional education, and then assess your proficiency at a specific skill and then tell you where to go get additional coaching on that,” Nikki Lee explained. AI can craft tailored learning journeys and provide instant feedback, reinforcing our ability to adapt and upskill in the face of shifting job landscapes. This AI mentorship is about making us sharper, more adaptable, and, ultimately, more valuable. 

Changing your approach to problem-solving  

As organizations adopt AI, a change in perspective is needed. The traditional, top-down approach is being replaced by a 'first principles' method of breaking down complex problems into their basic elements. Instead of generic solutions, you can understand the principles behind your work. This leads to more creative problem-solving and a more purpose-driven approach to AI that makes organizations adaptable and resilient. By embracing this mindset, we can stay ahead, respond better to market changes, and comply with the latest AI regulations.  

However, as we explore the possibilities of Gen AI in 2025, it's crucial to be mindful of the pitfalls. One of the most pressing challenges is the inherent bias in AI models, which can perpetuate inequalities. This is where ethical considerations come to the forefront, and compliance with regulations such as the upcoming EU AI Act is essential for maintaining transparency, fairness, and respect for human rights. With this Act, organizations will be mandated to include AI training into their compliance programs. The goal is to educate employees on ethical and responsible AI practices to ensure accountability and build trust with customers. What the training looks like, seems to be at the discretion of the employer. So how will you train your employees for a more ethical and unbiased approach to using AI?  

The potential of Gen AI in employee education, training, and business operations is immense and can revolutionize how we learn and develop skills. When we approach the integration of Gen AI into employee development and business operations with care and balance, we unlock its full potential while minimizing the risks. However, we must remember that the human element is irreplaceable. 

"We need to consider the human in the loop because we are the ones who are training AI models, selecting what data it gets; it gets trained on what we know. We are making decisions along the way," Nikki Lee explained.  

There are significant ethical concerns and principles that should govern the use of AI. As Scott Province noted, "Our unconscious biases, which are inherent in our language, can also be embedded in algorithms. This poses a risk of further perpetuating these biases if we rely solely on AI to produce language." All panelists emphasized the need to address biases in AI and stressed the importance of AI literacy in understanding and mitigating these risks. Scott continued, "How can I use this as an analytical or research tool to then come to my own findings? Considering how AI summarized this and what perspectives it's ignoring and what actions and events it's highlighting? And what does that tell us about ourselves? This is what the system is reflecting back to us — our zeitgeist."  

The panelists cautioned against the potential loss of human control if AI is used without critical awareness. As AI becomes more prevalent, it's crucial for both L&D leaders and employees to have AI literacy skills, including understanding the potential risks and pitfalls of its implementation. 

By prioritizing the greater good and fairness, organizations can ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly, benefiting both the workplace and society. As Dr. Cornelia Walters stated, "The first, second, and third industrial revolutions were driven by commercial interests, with social aspects viewed as collateral damage or benefit." It's necessary to shift this mindset and prioritize ethical considerations in the use of AI. We have the chance to steer this upcoming fourth industrial revolution (4IR) in a different direction by prioritizing positive social impact and, as a collateral benefit, the commercial benefits.

We're at a pivotal moment in history where our choices about AI shape the world. It's not just about the latest tech trends. It's how we can use these tools to create a society that's underpinned by fairness, transparency, and respect. We have the power to influence the direction AI takes. By advocating for an inclusive, ethical approach to AI, we can ensure that the technology serves all of us, creating a future that's not only smarter but also more just and sustainable.

AI is more than a tool — it's a new team member

Josh Penzell, VP of AI Strategy & Innovation at ELB Learning, is encouraging everyone to shift their perspective on AI. Rather than treating it as a tool, he proposes that AI should be seen as a new team member. This perspective change could lead to more effective utilization of AI and open up new possibilities for its application. He went into detail on what this could look like for leaders in the learning and development space in our recent webinar, How AI can be a partner in employee development. (You can watch the recording at the end of this article).

"AI is not just a new tool. AI is your new team member," stated Penzell. He argued that AI is capable of operating more like a partner or colleague than a tool, providing insights and identifying patterns that a human might overlook.

This shift in perspective can help alleviate fears and concerns about AI taking over jobs and replacing human workers. Instead, AI can be seen as a valuable asset that can enhance human capabilities and improve overall efficiency and productivity. By viewing AI as a team member, businesses and organizations can foster a collaborative environment where humans and AI work together towards a common goal. This can lead to innovative solutions and advancements in various industries, from healthcare to finance to manufacturing.

"I think that the future here is every single individual being able to hire and create their own team at scale. And I want you to think about this. You have something that is behaving like a human. It has the whole human knowledge," Josh urged the audience. This more strategic view of what AI brings can completely change an individual's day-to-day efficiency with some prompt engineering and upskilling around AI.

By working alongside AI, individuals can learn new skills and improve their own abilities, leading to personal and professional growth. Humans can tap into new capabilities and use it as a tool to tackle complex problems and create innovative solutions. It's an always-on brainstormer and teammate that you can train to respond in a way that fits your role, expected outcome, or business. With the combination of human creativity and AI's analytical abilities, the possibilities for progress are endless. But it's on the individual to embrace the technology and use it ethically to enhance, not hurt.

Enhancing productivity and employee engagement with AI

Josh Penzell explained that AI doesn't necessarily mean job loss. Instead, AI can increase productivity by taking over automatable and mundane tasks that can bog down a day's work. Statistically, employees who use AI are more engaged and motivated, which ultimately boosts their creativity. Because when AI can handle mundane and repetitive tasks, employees have more free time to focus on the challenging and engaging work.

"According to McKinsey, only 5% of jobs can be fully automated. But 60% of jobs have 30% of automatable tasks, meaning that those are easy things for us to let AI do for us," explained Penzell. This means that while AI may be able to take over some tasks, it's not there to take over your job.

The ability to think about and understand one's own thought processes can really up the ante on how the way we use AI for learning and development.

This means that instead of simply performing tasks and completing rote actions, AI, if trained properly, can reflect on its own decision-making and adapt accordingly. It may sound intimidating or like something out of a sci-fi movie, but this has huge implications for industries such as education and training, where AI can be used to personalize learning experiences and provide individualized feedback. The future of AI is undoubtedly exciting, and with a focus on metacognition, it has the potential to greatly enhance our world in ways we can only imagine.

Despite the advanced capabilities of AI, Josh, like many AI experts, emphasized the importance of human contribution. He suggested that the best way to effectively use AI is to engage with it in a conversation, provide it with feedback, and treat it like a colleague.

"You have a tool, and the tool's only as good as you are. You're putting information in, it's giving you some sort of something out. But with AI, it's able to look at that entire case study. It's able to provide and notice things we might not have noticed or we might have overlooked," Penzell points out.

This is where upskilling your team on AI, and training them on how to engineer prompts that churn out the best results comes into play. With proper training, teams can use this new machine for everything from brainstorming topics that leaders around the world are investing in to building out a script for the next coffee chat your CEO is hosting. What were Scott's key insights on integrating AI with soft skills development? Let's look at his recommended strategies, cautions, and methods for employing this transformative technology effectively and ethically.

AI as a catalyst for soft skills enhancement

AI's role in soft skills development is becoming increasingly pivotal. Tools like Large Language Models (LLMs) aren't just technological marvels; they're becoming essential in simulating realistic conversations that aid in practicing and honing communication skills. These AI-driven interactions can provide immediate feedback, allowing individuals to adjust and improve their communication strategies in real time.

Scott emphasized the importance of using AI as a catalyst for soft skills enhancement rather than relying on it as a replacement for human interaction. He stressed the need for a balanced approach, where AI is used to supplement and enhance traditional learning methods, not replace them entirely. Additionally, he cautioned against using AI in a way that could reinforce biases or perpetuate harmful stereotypes that can tear apart an organization and its culture. Instead, Scott encourages the use of diverse and inclusive data sets to ensure ethical and unbiased AI interactions.

Scott argues that empathy, a soft skill often difficult to measure and quantify, can be fostered and improved through the use of AI. In the webinar, he highlighted the potential for AI to standardize elements of empathy, such as active listening and the ability to understand others' perspectives.

By using AI to track and analyze these skills, teams can receive personalized feedback and guidance on how to improve, making empathy training more accessible and consistent across different demographics and professional fields.

This not only benefits individuals but the organization as a whole, as empathy is a crucial component of effective communication and collaboration. With the help of AI, we can continue to develop and enhance this important soft skill in the workforce.

But how do we do this? AI can be used to simulate scenarios and interactions, providing employees with a safe and controlled environment to practice and develop their empathy skills. This can be particularly useful for industries where face-to-face interactions are limited or difficult, such as remote teams or customer service roles. AI can analyze data from these simulations to provide personalized coaching and feedback, allowing employees to focus on specific areas of improvement.

But to have such success with AI, organizations must first upskill their teams on prompt engineering — one of the most crucial skills in the generation of AI.

Prompt engineering involves creating prompts that elicit specific responses from AI and then analyzing and interpreting those responses to assess if the desired state and response were met. It requires a combination of scientific methods and creative thinking to design prompts that accurately measure soft skills. Without prompt engineering knowledge, results from AI may not be reliable and could hinder the effectiveness of your training program. We'd recommend an organization using AI invest in upskilling their teams on prompt engineering to ensure AI use is effective, unbiased, and reliable.

The application of AI in soft skills training is intricate and will require meticulous prompt engineering skills and measurable, empirical heuristics. In the webinar, Scott emphasized the importance of understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI in this context. The design of AI prompts and the interpretation of their outputs must be handled with precision to truly benefit soft skills development.

While Scott was far from discouraging, it's important to not forget that the integration of AI into soft skills development comes with challenges. Measuring intangible qualities like empathy through AI poses significant ethical and methodological questions. The discussion highlighted the need for ongoing research and dialogue to navigate these complexities effectively.

There are valid concerns about the potential for bias in AI algorithms. If the data used to train the AI is biased, it can lead to biased outcomes and perpetuate discrimination. This is a particularly important issue in the context of soft skills development, where cultivating diversity and inclusivity is crucial.

Scott stressed the importance of ethical guidelines and continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure that AI is used responsibly and inclusively. AI shouldn't replace human interaction and feedback in soft skills development and should instead be used as a tool to enhance and support the learning process. This requires collaboration between AI developers, educators, and employees to create effective and ethical solutions. Scott brings a great use case for AI in soft skills development, but like any new tool, there's a responsibility for careful consideration and ethical implementation to avoid negative consequences.

As AI continues to evolve, its potential to enhance soft skills like empathy, communication, and leadership is immense. However, as Scott Provence aptly pointed out in the webinar, understanding the nuances of soft skills and the mechanics of AI is essential. One of the core themes of the webinar was the importance of transparency in AI use. Transparency is crucial, and AI deployment should follow a comprehensive internal framework that addresses any ethical, moral, and legal issues transparently. DiMauro stressed that all stakeholders, including employees, trainers, and administrators, must be fully aware of how AI is being used within the organization at all levels.

This transparency is crucial not only for organizational integrity but also for building trust with stakeholders and informing all parties on the data being used and the decision-making processes involved. Everyone must understand the capabilities, risks, and limitations of AI technologies in all settings for success.

Mark highlighted that while AI can provide valuable data-driven insights, it's humans who can consider the contextual and ethical nuances that AI might not fully grasp or may hallucinate in making final or ethical decisions. Use AI to support your judgments, rather than relying on it entirely. Human judgment and critical thinking skills are vital in ensuring that AI-generated recommendations align with organizational values and goals.

DiMauro emphasized the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation of AI algorithms to ensure they aren't biased or contradicting your organization's ethical standards. By involving humans in every step of the decision-making process, organizations can utilize AI effectively, mitigate potential risks, and improve the overall effectiveness of the AI technologies they employ. Ultimately, the successful integration of AI with human judgment can lead to more informed and ethical decision-making, benefiting internal and external stakeholders.

AI is transforming content creation, but not completely replacing writers

"There will be some kind of disruption recomposition of what our roles look like," Mark explained, referring to the role of educators and trainers. "The roles should become more fun, [with] higher leverage."

While AI is increasingly being used to generate content, it isn't expected to replace human writers. Instead, as Mark explained, we can expect it to transform roles, providing a higher level of work, creativity, and automation. AI allows writers, strategists, and instructional designers to focus on higher-value tasks such as strategy, without getting caught in the weeds of nuanced writing.

And good news for marketing teams, as Mark predicts, "AI-generated content is going to mean more content marketing jobs. Because people are going to get leverage faster — which means content marketing will meet goals faster, [and] marketers will get more budget to do more content marketing.”

But what about ethical integrity, laws, and standards in AI? Mark dedicated a major part of the webinar to how you can build out a robust ethical framework for deploying AI at work. DiMauro emphasized that while AI has transformative potential, it must be governed by strict ethical standards to prevent misuse, mitigate risk, and avoid major backlash. Legal implications, data privacy, and the necessity of maintaining human control over AI technologies are critical considerations.

The development and deployment of AI in learning and development must adhere to a strict ethical framework, developed by experts for your organization, that respects moral and legal standards. Mark advocates for a structured approach to AI implementation, which includes safeguards against misuse to ensure that the technology is used to enhance learning experiences, without compromising ethical standards.

We are seeing firsthand in the world right now that there is an inherent need for the responsible and ethical use of AI. Mark acknowledged that while AI has the potential to greatly benefit society, it also poses certain risks and challenges that need to be addressed. He emphasized repeatedly that AI shouldn't be used to handle sensitive data, due to potential security risks. He noted, “It's really critical and it's really important to use them [AI tools] for a purpose and with ethical, moral, and integral guidelines in mind." He emphasized that as AI evolves, it's crucial to ensure that it is being used responsibly, securely, and ethically.

While there is no standardized law or governance at this time for the ethical use of AI in organizations, or specifically in learning and development, Mark recommends starting with these three steps internally:

Creating a code of ethics for AI developers and users

Implement transparency and accountability measures

Continuously monitor and evaluate the impact of AI on society

Everyone should be prepared for a future with AI at work

Even those who may not be directly impacted by AI (yet) should know the implications and benefits it currently brings to the world of work. The future of AI in learning and development is promising, but it hinges on our ability to implement it responsibly. This human approach to AI is widespread across L&D. In the promotional video for their AI-powered learning management system, LMS365 says, “To us, AI is not about replacing people. It’s about making people better, more engaged, and more successful.”  

With course builder tools like LMS365’s AI-assisted course creation, L&D admins can prompt Gen AI to create a course based on a specific piece of educational content, like a video, document, or presentation. After the course is created, admins can then further prompt the AI to customize the course for the unique needs of their employees. 

At first glance it may seem like AI is doing all the work here, but human involvement is vital for a high-quality outcome. Without an L&D admin’s specific knowledge about their company’s upskilling needs, the AI would simply create generic content. When you picture the future, what do you see? Flying cars? Talking robots? Recently, we asked ourselves the same question and saw AI front and center. So, we created Go1 AI, a new curation resource specifically designed for our admin customers.

When people discuss AI, they tend to focus on flashy features. "Hey look, this one passed the Turing test!” This makes sense — it’s an exciting, futuristic technology, after all. But at Go1, we see things differently. Fundamentally, AI is about data. While machine learning is becoming increasingly intelligent, AI is only as good as the data it’s fed. Why? A recent study by the USC Information Sciences Institute answers this question.  

Researchers analyzed two AI tools: one relatively popular (ConceptNET), the other smaller and more niche (GenericsKB). Their goal was simple: “see if their data was fair.” Unfortunately, they found that 3.4% (ConceptNET) to 38.6% (GenericsKB) of the data was biased. According to Ninareh Mehrabi, the study’s lead author, “some results were so shocking that we questioned putting them in our paper. It was that bad.” 

Accordingly, AI isn’t infallible. It can be as helpful or biased as the data it’s fed. We know we said that Go1 AI can’t read your mind, but with some features, it might feel like it.  

We've upgraded our content tagging system by developing our own skill taxonomy. Put simply, that means we’ve grouped courses into sub-categories like “HR” or “Compliance” – like the tags you’d see when online shopping (i.e. “men’s activewear.”) A skills taxonomy is a fancy way of describing how we grouped these tagged skills into related ‘clusters’ (for a common example, see the OECD skills taxonomy). From there, we’ve tagged 98% of our library with relevant skills. In total, over 7,000 skills have been thoroughly mapped so far, and we hope to reach that 100% mark soon.   

What does this mean for admins? Simple: this vast map of skills is interlinked, meaning Go1 AI is constantly learning what skills and courses relate to each other. Go1 AI can break down learning concepts into skills and sub-skills, recognizing links between closely matched skills and recommending associated content, thereby predicting future learning needs. We hope you’re nerding out as much as we are over this! 

By achieving this level of granularity and detail, admins can find the best-matching results faster and more seamlessly.  

To provide more effective recommendations, Go1 AI takes a hybrid approach to searches, applying both lexical (matching words to words and synonyms) and semantic (understanding the underlying intent behind your search) matching.  

Lexical matching is the style of searching you’re probably used to. However, with semantic matching, it feels like Go1 AI knows what you want before you, as it understands your deeper intent. From there, it can suggest related content and surface the best-matched results. Types of searches you might want to try include:  

Topic-based searches, like “suggest content to improve decision-making.”   

Role-based searches, like “what should I learn as a sales manager?”   

Skill-based searches, like “what skills should I learn in product management?” 

Content intelligence adds science to the art of learning, helping admins make informed decisions to meet their L&D goals. To develop this, we use resources like quality scores, user feedback, consumption data, content metadata, and content transcripts.  

The bottom line? By harnessing our content intelligence, Go1 AI matches the right content to the right learning program, consistently recommending the most effective learning strategies for your team.

Introducing Gen AI: The future of personalized learning at Go1

In the past year, we’ve seen AI transform from a new phenomenon to a tool that’s becoming seamlessly integrated into our everyday lives. From powering chatbots to crafting personalized learning experiences, AI is rapidly transforming the landscape of learning and development. In fact, in 2023 we saw more than 8,000 enrollments in AI content! While we can’t predict the future of AI’s role in L&D, its potential to enhance learner engagement and boost team productivity is undeniable. 

The seemingly endless possibilities of AI have brought about excitement and enthusiasm, but the arrival of this new technology has also understandably stirred up some concern regarding its ethics. For example, machine learning algorithms rely on vast amounts of data to learn and improve over time.  

In the world of L&D, this might look like an AI-powered LMS collecting employee data to personalize their learning experience, which raises questions about how learner data is collected, used, and protected. 

This level of personalization is a positive use-case – it allows employees to quickly and easily find the right content for their goals, so they can spend less time searching for courses and more time learning. However, it’s important to be aware of AI’s ethical considerations to ensure it’s used responsibly. We’ve compiled some tips and insights to help you do just that. 


With GenAI tools like GPT-4 and Dall-E on the rise, it’s important to remember that these aren’t hands-off solutions to content creation. For example, if you prompt GPT-4 to create a learning strategy for you and then simply copy and paste the AI-generated text into your strategy, chances are, most readers are going to notice. It takes a real person to review the AI-written content for accuracy and brand voice alignment, and then make any needed changes. Sometimes many changes will be necessary to get it right and sometimes light edits will do, but regardless, it’s rare that AI will generate exactly what you need without any human involvement. 

Rather than using AI to replace human expertise, we suggest using it as a supplement to your or your team’s expertise. You’ll find that the combination of human proficiency and AI efficiency is where the real magic happens. 

Transparency in AI usage is crucial. According to a study by UKG, 78% of C-Suite leaders say their business is actively using AI, but 54% of employees have no idea how their company uses it. This knowledge gap can breed mistrust and uncertainty in the workforce, but the solution is simple. Of the survey participants, 75% said they would be more willing to embrace AI if their company was transparent about its AI use. The message is clear: when companies are honest about how they’re using AI, employees get on board. 

Conversely, employees need to be truthful about AI’s role in their work. In a survey by Fishbowl, 68% of professionals said their boss doesn’t know they’re using AI at work. Dishonesty about AI-generated content can be considered plagiarism, so be clear about how you’re using AI. Remember, transparency builds trust. 

AI data privacy and security is a hot topic these days. As an emerging technology, AI is complex, and its role in society is still being determined. Consequently, it’s continually being evaluated and regulated both locally and globally. To remain compliant, organizations and individuals alike need to stay current on new laws and requirements regarding AI, adjusting their usage and privacy policies accordingly. 

Be sure to check privacy policies associated with your learning and development programs, including policies from your LMS and your content provider. Find out if their products use AI, and if so, understand how they’re accessing and using learner data. Make sure your learners are also aware that these privacy policies are available to them and that they understand how to access them.
