8 teams, 48 hours, 6 time zones, and a whole lot of coffee & sugar consumed... that's what went down last week for our Product, Data, Design & Engineering team in their bi-annual hackathon. 

The event was again mostly virtual with teams taking part from around Australia, Vietnam, and Portugal. The challenge was “Experimentation: exploring the art and science of validating assumptions".

"I've always been involved in hackathons that have been local, and physical together. But this was my first Go1 Hackathon and I know that these events either succeed or fail based on the enthusiasm that people put into them. While many teams wowed the judges and the crowd, the winning team was "Team F5 (so refreshing)" with their experiment to reduce refresh rates by improving the loading experience for customers. 

The team consisted of Technical Lead Margaret Lydon, Senior Developers Alex Bergin and Aung Maw, Developer Guanhau Ding, Senior Product Designer Joyce Sueko, and Content Operations Associate Luke Donohoe. They won the coveted Golden Hoodies and the Hack Trophy, plus some serious bragging rights to boot!

As another year speeds towards its end, we’re looking back on the exciting updates, additions and improvements here at Go1. 

Our focus this year has been on not only continuing to grow the scale of learning content, but investing further into expanding the quality and diversity of resources.

 2022 saw some impressive improvements and new features focused on streamlining and simplifying both the admin and end user experience of the Go1 platform.

We are so grateful to have been part of the HR + L&D Innovation and Tech Fest. The event was a blast, and we met so many inspiring people who are changing the way we work. Here's our wrap of the two days.

With a halo glowing so bright above us we were impossible to miss. Across the two days, the Go1 booth facilitated a lot of meaningful conversations, giving us a chance to learn more about the highlights and challenges of L&D professionals.

Across the two days, we saw some fantastic keynote sessions from Penny Beecham, YMCA NSW, Michelle Ockers of Emerging Stronger, and Tim Teale & Natasha Dunn from Go1.

It's always exciting when we get a chance to hear how our customers are using Go1 in their everyday work—and it's even better when they share insights into how they use it to improve their organisation.  

We heard from Penny Beecham, Lead Learning and Development Specialist as she spoke about YMCA NSW’s journey to embracing the digital age.  

Pivot, pivot, pivoooot - Global training expectations have shifted, and organisations need to keep up.

On Day 2, we were excited to host a breakfast session with Michelle Ockers to launch our new L&D Playbook for enabling busy managers. 

Co-written by Michelle, Laura Overton, and Shannon Tipton, this playbook helps L&D tackle the challenge of working with managers and equipping them with tools to develop their teams. 

Thanks to all of you who came to the session. We hope that the conversation sparked some ideas and that you can put what you learned into practice. Here are a few takeaways from the session: 

Michelle asked around the room—what are your biggest pain points? A common response in the room was time, or rather, the lack of. Other responses centred around opportunity cost, the implications of remote working in the modern workplace, and relevance.  

There was some great conversation around the room about how to approach leaders who don't see L&D as a priority. Some of the recommendations from around the room included bridging learning, changing the mindset and language around learning, and making learning loud (social proof).  

One piece of advice Michelle offered is to work like a high-performing learning team—they’re 62x more likely to equip managers with tools to support learning!

L&D Tech Executive Panel | Exploring the New Frontier of Learning

Go1 Head of Sales Acquisition Natasha Dunn joined a live panel and brought a unique perspective to the conversation. She spoke about adapting to change and how it all starts with leadership and management. Leaders must walk the walk and talk the talk for their businesses to be successful. 

When asked what those who are operating effectively at the new frontier of learning are doing differently, Tash highlighted that:  

They're rethinking their talent recruitment and retention strategies, recognising that skill alone isn't enough in today's market. They're hiring for will and not for skill; we can train skills, but we can't train will.  

They're considering how to best reduce costs while providing quality content to meet learners' needs. It all comes down to prioritising post-implementation actions just as much as implementing new systems.

We were really impressed by how engaged everyone was during the sessions. Some attendees even planned on making changes based on what they learned on the first day alone!

That's a wrap! Sydney HR + L&D Innovation and Tech Fest  

It’s been a few years since Go1 played host to the Hon Dr Jim Chalmers MP, and we were thrilled to have the now Federal Treasurer and our local member back at Go1's Logan, Queensland headquarters. 

Dr Chalmers had a fruitful meeting with myself and fellow co-founders, Andrew Barnes, Chris Eigeland and Chris Hood, where we discussed a range of issues affecting the skills supply - now and in the future - amidst a worldwide talent crunch.

He was also briefed on the progress of Go1’s new global headquarters in Logan. The co-founders reiterated Go1’s desire for Logan to become an innovation hub, and the construction of our new headquarters solidifies our commitment to this region.

Dr Chalmers then participated in our end-of-week call across 22 countries, taking questions from both our Australian and US teams about economic participation and the economy, both locally and abroad.

One question was from Brisbane resident Julia Ponder, 70, a Go1 content operations associate. She asked the Treasurer:

"How do we ensure that older people, especially women, who want to work are able to and how can their skills and experience be appreciated and valued."

“There's a couple of things I think we need to do differently.

First of all, which obviously Vu and the team are doing here, is we need a change of mindset about workers with more experience.

When it comes to government policy, we do need to be prepared to do things differently as well. One of the things that we've recently done is making it easier for people who may have retired (and) who want to work a couple more days a week or just a few more hours, without jeopardising their pension."

"But I think most of all a change of mindset, and also as part of that change of mindset - and that's why this place has such a dear place in my own heart - is when you think about that lifelong learning piece. We have to ditch this old, outdated assumption that you finish school, you do a little bit of extra training in your late teens or early 20s. And somehow that sustains you for 40 or 50 years of working life.

This is something that Vu and I have talked a lot about over the years as I've tried to stay in touch with the magic that you're doing here at Go1, which is to recognise that people need their skills constantly topped up. We need to partner with great places like Go1 to make sure that we're actually doing that."

Citing industry research, Dr Chalmers said most people had around 17 different jobs spread across five different careers and with help from Go1, government, the training sector and other players, “we need to get better at that lifelong learning piece so people can update their skills so we get the best of both worlds – experience of people who’ve been in the workforce for a while at the same time have contemporary, up-to-date skills as well”.

The Treasurer also met the next-generation of Logan software developers and engineers - kids attending Junior Engineers' Coding Camp, organised in conjunction with Go1.

The fun and educational program is an entry into the world of coding, robotics and mechatronics, and is open to 7–13-year-old children of Go1’s employees.

His visit was capped off with Tiffany Abi-Fares, Go1 marketing coordinator and Logan resident, who presented Dr Chalmers with a locally personalised hoodie.

HundrED is a global education non profit that advocates for a child-centric approach to teaching and personalised, passion-based learning. They believe that visionary leadership at every level of the education system is essential. HundrED have released a series of videos from influential educational figures including Sir Ken Robinson, Andy Hargreaves and Sugata Mitra covering topics from assessment to the learning environment.

Adam Voigt, the founder of Real Schools has developed a series of videos for leaders to insight a positive culture within their school setting. Adam’s stories and genuine nature will surely inspire you to transform and enhance your school culture through a focus on what really counts. 

MEG Languages focusses on the practical steps schools can take to become Globally Competent, to develop Global Citizens and to offer engaging Global Education. MEG has released two engaging courses on global competency and leaders can utilise the MEG whole school framework within the course to develop Globally Competent staff and students.

Which great content partners are coming soon to EC Premium?

Nicole Dyson at Future Anything has built a ‘future ready’ framework which supports youth in schools to turn their passions into innovative ideas. She is currently creating a course for teachers to lead authentic learning experiences that are Australian Curriculum aligned and connects students to the real world.

Sisters Bianca and Kritz at The Big Sister Experience offer school workshops and professional development for teachers with the goal of becoming the lead providers of life-education and wellbeing support pre-teen and teen girls. In their course, you can expect to uncover ethical and moral issues as well as tools and strategies for ensuring girls  live a happy and healthy life.

Story Factory is a not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people in under-resourced communities across NSW. In their two upcoming professional development courses, they will uncover practical and versatile techniques for implementing effective creativity in the classroom and strategies to engage disengaged learners.

Located just above the Central Coast in NSW, Tuggerah Lakes Berkeley Vale Campus is a 7-10 school which has partnered with EC for four years. EC supports several teams within the school, focussing on classroom collaboration, differentiation of student learning, school attendance and supporting Aboriginal education through cultural awareness and data insights. 

The co-creation of ‘The Drop’ has been one of the major successes of the partnership. The Drop is a bus that is used to take students to and from school, and it has been designed to be an engaging, exciting and supportive journey for students with the aim of improving attendance across the school.

With 100 staff online and an outstanding engagement rate of 83% so far into their first month of launch on EC Premium, we are ecstatic to have this amazing and forward-thinking school on our platform!

Gabbi brings years of education campaign and communications experience to the EC team. Backed by a multitude of science and theoretical research, the course also packs in easy tips and tricks to create a warm, welcoming and wholesome environment for students and staff.

The Cybersafety Project focusses on social media presence and gaming in their interactive course. Being safe in an increasingly virtual world is at the forefront of modern education and this is a critical and insightful course for all K-12 teachers with students learning on digital devices.

Culture Shock aims to make a whole-school change towards better wellbeing and a positive culture through Kylie Dermody's course. With practical and applicable tools, you can assess what your own school culture feels like and make a change today.

Which great content partners should you check out this month?

Michaela Epstein at Maths Teacher Circles has developed a course to be implemented by K-12 teachers, directly into the classroom. The interactive videos and activities invite teachers to try new strategies and includes professional learning methods that will get teachers excited again about teaching maths. 

Based on the ground-breaking work of global education leader Joanne McEachen and her team of international education experts at The Learner First, embark on an inspiring journey in The Contributive Learning interactive course. Bringing together decades of experience at all levels of education, their research-proven tools and processes have been used in thousands of schools around the world.

EC's own Edupreneur course gives teachers the 'how'. Located in the Western suburbs of Sydney, Doonside Technology is a 7-12 school that has been connected with EC for four years now. The team at EC have collaborated with the Head Teachers to improve the quality of teaching and enhance outcomes for all students through the development of targeted Faculty Management Plans. With the plans now in action, the EC team continues to guide the faculty leaders through regular check-ins and coaching to keep 'the wheels in motion' and by building leadership capabilities.

These are the headline topics for our August playlists: “Cultivate Customer Satisfaction: Introduction to Customer Service” and “Elevate Your Sales Skills: Strategies for Selling.” In this edition, we’re spotlighting three of the content providers featured on these playlists: AssembleYou, Skillshub, and Thrive. 

What content partners should you check out this month?

Specializing in short, actionable courses, AssembleYou is a great choice for business skills, strategy, project management, and personal development (among many other topics). They are based in the UK, yet create training designed for global audiences. Many of the 230 AssembleYou courses available in the Content Hub feature an audio format and open with this guidance: “Sit back, close your eyes and listen. Better still, play this in the car, while gardening, or out jogging.”  More than half their courses are 30 minutes or shorter, with the longest course lasting 180 minutes. 

Skillshub is an engaging UK-based partner that offers micro-learning courses that can be taken as stand-alone learning experiences or sequenced together into learning pathways. With 888 courses currently in the Content Hub, Skillshub covers topics ranging from sales and customer service to diversity and wellbeing. Most courses, which vary in length from 2 to 25 minutes, are accompanied by a job aid to help transfer learning into real-world action. (There are three comprehensive courses, such as the Retail Sales Academy, that are more than 2 hours.)  

Known for their visual appeal and thoughtful content, Thrive courses and documents are a favorite of many learners. They offer 316 learning experiences in the Content Hub on contemporary topics such as reducing mental health stigma, neurodiversity, empathy, and flexible thinking, along with traditional topics like teamwork and hiring. Thrive calls the UK home, but also offers many of their courses in Italian as well as English.

What new content partners have we added to the Content Hub?

dss+ (formerly DuPont Sustainable Solutions) 

This new content provider, based in the US, offers courses on workplace safety, compliance, manufacturing, and soft skills.   

They feature 145 microlearning courses ranging from 5 to 15 minutes. Each course features a video, summary, and assessment. 

Titles include: The New Normal: Emergency Communication Plan for Employers; Safety Matters: Lockout/ Tagout; and Pause for Performance: Compassion. 

dss+ courses are currently available in English…but additional languages are coming soon! 

With 88 courses in the content hub, this new UK-based provider expands content coverage in the areas of communication, leadership, coaching, negotiation, and other critical soft skills.   

Courses by Maguire have a consistent UX, featuring an animated facilitator who guides learners through the experience. Each course is available in English and is 30 minutes in duration. 

Titles include: Mental Health Awareness; Understanding Different Personality Types; Giving Constructive Feedback; How to Mentor Effectively; and Coaching Using the GROW Model. 

The 16 new courses from US-based Get Control! are designed to “help digital workers get control, save time and get more done.” 

Each video-driven course is 30 minutes long and is available in English. 

Titles include: Get Control! of Email and Outlook; Get Control! of Google Search; Get Control! of OneDrive and SharePoint; and Get Control! of Digital Time Management. 

The 50 courses from this new content provider expand topic coverage ranging from business strategy and leadership to digital skills and teamwork. 

Soundview courses, all of which are 30 minutes or shorter, provide learners with PDF book summaries and videos featuring key insights from leading business authors. 

Titles include: 5 Ways to be an active learner; What is authentic leadership?; How to stop procrastinating; Connect with your people; and How to build a high engagement culture. 

This new content provider offers in-depth courses on human resources, business skills, leadership, and health & wellbeing. 

Designed using the ADDIE Adult Learning model, Velsoft courses are between two and four hours long and include explicit learning objectives, pre-and post-assessments, and lists for further reading. 

This content provider is based in Canada and all courses are in English. 

Titles include Human Resource Training: HR for the non-HR Manager; Public Speaking: Presentation Survival School; Managing Pressure and Maintaining Balance; and The ABC's of Supervising Others. 

What’s Shannon’s favorite course right now? 

I recently attended a session at our annual sales kick-off about identifying your strengths and weaknesses at work. The session dug into how we can find our strengths and the benefits of leaning into those areas to be happier and more fulfilled at work.  After the session, I went looking in Go1 to see what courses I could recommend providing a similar outcome and came across Identifying Your Strengths by ej4. I love ej4’s simple approach to training, offering a quick video, typically 3-7 minutes, followed by a quiz.  Most courses offer a downloadable resource as well.  This course gives easy steps to identify your strengths, how to ask for feedback from your peers, and the benefits of using a career coach to maximize your strengths.

Transforming workplace learning - speaking sessions

On the 15th and 16th of June, we set out to help L&D teams prepare for the new world of work and digital transformation. Our lineup of speakers featured several specialists, including L&D analysts, researchers, and practitioners.
