Without good finances, your business will struggle. You must make sure you aren’t spending too much or bringing in too little.

Creating a budget is important. The budget will help you manage your spending. You can create a business budget by estimating your revenue and expenses.

You need to be able to read your financial statements. Your statements include line-by-line items of your income and expenses, along with totals. Reports you might use include the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement.

Getting ready to develop a new online course for your staff or students? It’s important to take some time to prepare before creating learning content, so you can be sure that you’re designing your course in the best way possible for your learners.

You might be tempted to just jump in and start writing your content, but the best eLearning courses always involve a good amount of preparation and planning.

We’ve put together the key steps you need to know before creating learning content.

Whether it’s your first time designing an eLearning course, or you just need a little fresh inspiration or help warming up, you’re sure to find these preparation tips helpful.

First things first, your eLearning course needs to have clear goals and objectives. You’ll want to sit down and think about your goals, well before you get started on any content or design elements.

The most important part of this step is defining the learning objectives for your target audience. This means establishing exactly what you want your learners to take away from your eLearning course. This will serve as a guide throughout the eLearning course design process – you can keep coming back to these objectives, to make sure you’re meeting your learner’s needs.

You should also take this time to establish goals for the eLearning project itself. What do you want to achieve from this project? What timeframe do you need to complete the course design? It’s a good idea to give yourself mini deadlines, with set dates for completing certain chunks of learning content. This will help you stick to your project schedule, keeping you on track and able to meet your deadline.

Before building a house, you need to figure out what tools and resources you need for the job. And building an eLearning course is just the same.

At this step, think about the eLearning resources you have at your disposal, to allow you to create the best possible online course for your staff or students.

What authoring tool will you be using to create your eLearning course? What LMS and apps will you be working with? Are there certain subject matter experts you can get on board? And will you be using a project management platform, to assign tasks and deliverables to team members?

Christoforos Pappas, from eLearning Industry, agrees that “gathering your tools” is an essential step of the eLearning course preparation process. You’ll want to figure out exactly which stage of the process requires which tools, before you need them.

For example, “if you are going to be using a new video creation tool, make sure that you have gained an in depth understanding of how to use it properly and that you are aware of its features before the video creation stage rolls around,” Pappas recommends.

We’ve talked before about the importance of storyboarding for eLearning development. And this is certainly a key step in your course design preparation.

As we said then, good eLearning courses have one thing in common – they all use effective storyboarding in the development phase. In fact, many eLearning professionals consider storyboards to be the most important element of online course creation.

Your storyboard can be thought of as the very foundation of your eLearning course. It’s like a map that clearly outlines all the visual, text and audio elements of every single screen that makes up an eLearning course.

And because storyboards are like blueprints of your course materials, it makes it super easy to update learning content at any time.

It’s also very important to make sure that the design elements of your online course are consistent. You might think this isn’t as important as the written content of your course, but aesthetics will play a large role in how successful your eLearning course is.

Karla Gutierrez, from Shift Disruptive eLearning, considers consistent graphic design to be a crucial step in online course design preparation.

“The consistency of a course reduces the cognitive load of learners focusing on unnecessary features of the course. If every screen of the course has different color schemas and fonts, it does not foster a continuous learning experience,” Gutierrez explains.

So make sure you give thought to this when reviewing your storyboard.

How to prepare before creating learning content

Have you noticed an increase in employee absenteeism across your organisation? Worried about certain team members who are taking more sick days than usual?

While it’s inevitable that staff will need to take time off from work every now and then, it’s important that employers and managers stay on top of absenteeism – for the wellbeing of your employees, as well as your business.

Absence from work due to sickness, injury, mental health, or caretaker duties should always be dealt with in a fair and compassionate way. However, unfortunately, some employee absences are based in less legitimate reasons – and this is where things can get tricky for managers and team leaders.

Let’s look at the various reasons behind employee absence, how it impacts a business, and what you can do to manage absenteeism across your organisation.

An employee could be away from the workplace for a number of possible reasons. As we said above, they could be dealing with illness or injury, taking a mental health day, going to a medical appointment, or looking after someone in their care. These are considered to be authorised absences, due to legitimate reasons.

On the other hand, they could be taking unauthorised absence: calling in sick to attend a job interview, work on their CV, hang out with friends, go to the beach, sleep off a hangover… you get the idea.

The thing is, there’s no real way to determine if a staff member is actually ill when they’re absent from work. As outlined in a recent article in Forbes, absenteeism is “an especially difficult problem to tackle, because there are both legitimate and poor excuses for missing work - and it can be challenging for employers to effectively monitor, control and reduce absenteeism.”

Here's where things can become even more complicated for managers: are you able to recognise and respond when the reasons behind an employee’s absenteeism are work-related? If a team member is staying away from work due to bullying, harassment, burnout, stress or any other work-related reason, employers and managers need to know. Or if someone is avoiding going into work because of heavy workloads, stressful meetings, or disengagement from their job.

If this is the case, it's essential that you get to the bottom of the issue to address it. You don’t want employees using their sick leave for these reasons, and you don’t want the kind of organisational culture where people are feeling too stressed, disengaged or under-valued to come to work.

The Impact of Employee Absence on Your Business

As well as protecting the wellbeing of your staff members, you’ll be doing yourself a favour by managing employee absenteeism.

Many employers aren’t quite aware of how the total costs of absenteeism affect their business. Absenteeism costs companies billions of dollars each year in wages, extra management time, decreased productivity, and lower quality of goods/services.

In addition to these financial impacts, absenteeism can result in understaffing, increased safety risks (when under-trained staff fill in for others) and poor company morale.

As Forbes reminds us, “because missed work days have a profound financial effect on a company's bottom line, it is beneficial for most businesses to implement strategies to equitably monitor, reduce and respond to absenteeism.”

So what strategies can you implement to effectively manage absenteeism?

The Importance of an Employee Absenteeism Policy

You need to start by developing and implementing a strong employee absenteeism policy.

All employers need to ensure that they have current and up-to-date policies and procedures in place around this issue. Particularly in larger organisations, where it can be more difficult to control absences and their associated costs.

An absenteeism policy helps to make things clearer when it comes to how absences are monitored, recorded and managed across the company. Your policy will help to inform employees of the exact process they should follow for any absence, including who, how and when to notify their employer

Your policy will also include information on the difference between authorised and unauthorised absence, making it clear that unauthorised absence is a disciplinary matter that may result in action. When employees know that all absences are being monitored, reviewed and documented, the number of unauthorised absences is likely to decline.

However, an absenteeism policy isn’t just for the benefit of employers – these policies also protect workers, as all managers are required to follow the guidelines provided by the organisation’s absence policy and deal with issues in a fair and consistent way.

The dashboard is the primary spot users land after signing into their Go1 portal. It is the user interface that provides settings and information into an organized way. A Go1 dashboard has multiple interactive blocks that give users the most rewarding experience in using the Go1 Learning Management System.

The welcome message at the top of the page that tells some general tips is there by default. These texts can be customized by an admin to welcome users to the portal or give basic instructions. The welcome message edit function can be accessed under the “Setup Portal” tab. Under the “Configure Portal” function, there you’ll see the “welcome message” edit field.

The feature image behind the welcome message can also be customised by uploading a JPG, GIF or PNG file that should not exceed to 5 MB. To upload feature image, simply click the “upload portal images” and you’ll find the fields where you can upload four different types of portal images., login logo, login background, feature image and dashboard icon.

Once you get into the upload images section, you are now able to upload a feature image. There are two types of feature image, a panoramic image and a more square image option. The "dashboard image: widescreen" is used for the dashboard header on tablets and PCs and the "dashboard image: portrait" is used for the dashboard header on mobile devices.

The dashboard view may vary depending on the user role. Some features may not be visible to all types of users. At Go1 LMS, there are 4 types of user roles: admin, learner, tutor and manager.

Scrolling below the welcome message are the blocks:

All - all types of learning items should appear here.

Courses - tells the list of courses that a user is enrolled to.

Learning items - shows the individual learning items that a user is enrolled to

Awards - can contain a course or courses or learning items.

Overview - where you’ll find your student’s submissions that needs tutor’s assessment.

Resources - shows student’s courses and learning items

Reports - shows student’s enrollment reports

A discussion board can be created for each group. Grouping users is very helpful to organize a team. Let’s say a portal has 3 types of users: level1, level2 and level 3, creating a group for each level can be a great help to provide the most appropriate training for each group and assigning courses and learning items to a group is much easier than doing it individually.

Admins and users can create a Discussion board and group. This setting can be configured in Portal Settings Configuration. Groups and discussion are great communication tools that can be used for wider communication within a team. Creating a discussion can be initialized by creating a group members who you would want to participate in the discussion board.
