Self-awareness means knowing your strengths & blind spots

The wonderful thing about people is that we are all different, with different strengths. But every strength has a corresponding weakness. The issue is if we are unaware of our weaknesses then they are blind spots that have a habit of biting us in the bottom. What I’d like to share with you is how you can use Self-Awareness to be a better boss.

Self-awareness is knowing what you’re good at and knowing where your weaknesses are. Self-awareness rarely makes the list of top leadership traits, yet it is one of the most valuable.

Ask yourself: “How can you be a successful leader if you don’t even know yourself”

Gallup research shows that great bosses do three things:

Great bosses fully recognize their talents and develop them into strengths,

Great bosses manage their strengths to overcome their weaknesses,

Great bosses invent ways to apply their strengths in new and creative ways to reach their goals. 

Surely no-one should know yourself better than yourself? But a study by Korn/Ferry International (2012) showed that nearly 80% leaders had blind spots about their talents. And in this study of 2,750 leaders, 40% had at least one hidden strength.

My personal experience is that the problem with blind spots is that you just don’t know about them by their very nature. It’s like you look into your toolbox and only find a hammer. You don’t realise that other people have got screwdrivers and yet others have got hacksaws. What happens is that you just think they are bad at hammering things. As the expression goes: “To a man with a hammer, every problem is a nail.”  

To push this analogy right to the edge: If you use a hammer when what you really need is a saw, you are destined to fail, no matter how good you are at using a hammer and no matter how hard you try. 

Self-awareness requires an external perspective

Without some sort of external perspective people remain unaware of things they haven’t experienced themselves. How I see this manifest with the people I coach is that bosses get stuck with the same repeating problems. 

What this might look like for you is when you continually have the same disputes and problems with your employees. Has employee Dave done bad work again? This pattern will repeat until you figure out what YOU need to change to fix this.

The thing about people is that we are all different. What works well for one person can have the opposite effect for another. Watch out for one size fits all management advice because this might not be the right thing for you. Like Einstein wrote, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Don’t be a fish trying to climb a tree, instead improve your self-awareness and find your management style that suits the person who you are.

I really like the new movement towards self-leadership. It’s wonderful to see people taking responsibility for improving themselves. But the first step towards self-leadership is self-awareness. You’re going to get stuck repeating the same mistakes over and over again, until you figure out what blind spots are sabotaging you. When you know your strengths and learn to leverage them, that's when you can go from average to Superhero.

For hundreds of years, education looked a lot like going to Hogwarts minus all the interesting magic. We’d have to travel to some far off location, sit in a classroom for hours on end and hope that you had a great teacher. Now, thanks to online learning even us muggles live in a magical age of learning. We have amazing technology but successful development requires a little more than just internet access.

When I work with people on development (whether these are individuals, managers or Human Resource staff), I see the same thing happen over and over again. As an aspiration, the benefits of development are fantastic. And who doesn’t have goals and good intentions? But the reality of doing the work gets in the way of the magical results. In this article I want to share with you what Hogwarts can teach us about effective learning. Relax because these techniques work for muggles like you and I.

What is it that you want from your development? You see whatever it is that you want from your (work) life, personal development is going to help you to get there. But the trick is finding the time to invest in your future.

The hardest thing about development is finding the time to do development. What magic does Hogwarts use to make time for learning? It’s simple they don’t use any magic at all - instead they have classes, just like regular learning. Because it’s simple and it works.

Now when you’re doing online learning, there aren’t any class times and “anytime” becomes “no time”. So how do you copy this? It’s simple, take the development off your to do list and stick it into your diary. Book an appointment with yourself because you’re simply not going to get the benefits of development unless you set some time aside for it. 

Better still, make it a recurring appointment because no school, not even Hogwarts, tries to finish the syllabus in one single lesson. Regular, consistent lessons are the path to success.

Tip: Is your diary too full? Again, no magic needed: Just go a few weeks out and book the time before someone else does. This is the process to follow in YOUR Power Hour

The magic sorting hat because people are different

So people are different but our education system has a habit of treating everyone the same. Successful people have great self awareness, they know what their strengths are and they know how to compensate for their weaknesses. At Hogwarts they have a magic sorting hat to put you into the right house. 

The closest thing to a Magic Sorting Hat is finding out your Learning Power in the Learning Skills Assessment. If you ever felt like a square peg in a round hole, this assessment will help you understand what makes you different to other people. And will show you how to make the best of your natural skills and tendencies when it comes to development. 

Tip: Are you responsible for employees and wish that they would improve their skills and capabilities? Help them to find their own Learning Power by sharing this assessment with them. 

You know the drill, as soon as you sit down to spend some quality time developing your skills, your phone rings or there’s someone to see you. Now in the Harry Potter world, you’d have a wand that you could use to banish distractions. But zapping someone with a spell seems like an extreme way to avoid distractions. 

Once again Hogwarts uses a less extreme, totally conventional, yet effective method to avoid distractions. And that’s that they have dedicated learning spaces. Called classrooms and libraries. Just like we have in the muggle world. 

Is your desk a hive of distractions from telephone calls, to social media, post-it reminders, demanding customers, colleagues and let’s not forget about the boss? Then the trick is to hide away from it all. For that magical hour: Shut your door, put your phone on silent, turn off desktop notifications, leave instructions not to be disturbed. 

Or if all else fails book a meeting room. Either take the distractions away or take yourself away from the distractions.

TIP: If your boss is the biggest distraction preventing you from doing your training then establish an “upfront contract” with your boss. As a start, ask your boss what skills they want you to develop in your one on one meetings with your boss. Those broomsticks don’t look very comfortable, but I still bet that you wish you could fly. But only a muggle would expect to go from standing to playing quidditch in one go. Even wizards start small and build up.

It’s the same with your personal development. Don’t start with a huge or boring project. If your first course is advanced quantum mathematics, then you’re setting yourself up for failure, before you even start. 

And that’s advice for managers and HR professionals too. Don’t let your employees first experience of the company Learning Management System be a boring course on compliance.

Instead start off with something short, interesting and with an immediate payback. Use this to build momentum for bigger things and soon you will be flying through your own personal development.

The thing with development projects is that they are speculative. Not every project is going to work. The nature of learning is failing a lot until you start to fail less. 

So what do wizards do when they fail? Again no magic spells, they try again. If a student at Hogwarts doesn’t pass, there’s no magic potion or spell. They just repeat the subject. Boringly conventional and boringly effective because it’s perseverance that determines how successful people are.

The way to stay persistent with your personal development is to accept that you’re going to get knocked off course a few times. But as long as you book an hour a week with yourself to monitor your progress and keep moving forward, then you’ll get there in the end.

Forget spells, the solution to your problems is in your hands

If someone from 100 years ago looked at online learning today they would think that it’s magical. Got a problem? You can pull a magic device out of your pocket and get a wizard to teach you a magic spell (ahem get expert advice, for example see this dialogue on how to encourage your employees to solve their own problems - it works so well it’s almost like using a magic spell). 

To solve your problems, advance your career or just learn a cool new skill, you don’t have to go looking for Platform 9 and ¾. All you need to do is know “How to Develop Yourself” because this is the one skill to rule all others. (Oops I may be straying into Lord of the Rings Territory here :-) ) Don’t wait for magic to solve your problems, start investing in yourself by setting some dedicated time aside every week.  

Dumbledore is the Headmaster at Hogwarts - he’s an experienced wizard who guides pupils through difficulties. Many people struggle with online learning because of a lack of personal interaction, a lack of guidance and a lack of accountability. That’s why we all need a Dumbledore in our life. You won’t find Dumbledore in any online course, but you can improve your own online learning by working with your boss or a mentor.

The eLearning Assist Podcast: Tips from Bentleys for encouraging a culture of learning through effective training 

Part 3 of the Aged Care Quality Standards Series

The new Aged Care Quality Standards are now in place across Australia. The standards apply to all aged care services, including residential care, home care, flexible care and services under the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Now is the time to familiarise yourself with them.  

In order to meet the standards, staff must be well-equipped and feel confident in delivering the best possible care. To support this, Go1 has partnered with Australian training provider Aged Care Learning Solutions to bring you all the online training courses you need to be ACQS compliant.

Standard 3 looks at providing consumers with high-quality personal and clinical care. Meeting the requirements for this standard is closely linked to the assessment guidelines set out in Standard 2, as monitoring and planning with consumers is essential for delivering the best possible service. 

Important takeaways from the Standard 3 guidelines

As those working in aged care organisations will know, a significant amount of time is allocated to supporting consumers with personal and clinical care. Personal and clinical care includes areas such as management of unexpected deterioration or change, preventing falls and medication management. The delivery of personal and clinical care is expected to be best practice and most importantly tailored for each person to promote their health and wellbeing.

To summarise the guidelines set out in Standard 3, there are a number of aspects to delivering an excellent level of personal and clinical care. As an aged care organisation leader or staff member, it is important to be aware of these overarching themes: 

Firstly, services must be personalised to meet the needs of the individual consumer. Consumers will have a diversity of needs with regards to personal and clinical care. The focus of care should be on ensuring their needs and wants are met in the way that is best for them. 

Any support with personal or clinical care also needs to be delivered in a timely manner. If there are signs of deterioration or change in the consumer’s mental health, cognitive or physical function, capacity or condition, staff members need to make sure their response is timely and appropriate. The best way to ensure a timely response to any changes observed is through regular and ongoing assessment. If care plans are reviewed regularly along with observations of consumers, staff members will have the information they need to respond quickly and in the right way for each person.

The sharing of the right information at the right time to the right people is vital within the service and externally so each consumer will be afforded the care that is right and safe for them.

The risk from infectious illness and inappropriate treatment are also highlighted under Standard 3. All efforts to minimise these risks through good infection control practices and safe use of antibiotics is required.

Below is our checklist of questions for aged care providers to use and to generate conversation around the topic. The advice we share is to be implemented at the discretion of those responsible for the quality of aged care provision. Staff wishing to implement changes should do so in consultation with colleagues and line managers. 

Checklist for outstanding personal and clinical care

Whether you feel confident in delivering a high standard of personal and clinical care, or you think there is room for improvement within your organisation, this checklist will help you to review the service you provide: 

1. How does your organisation develop the competency and knowledge of the workforce to ensure that the service reflects best practice? (Requirement 3a)

Ensuring all staff members are up to date with the latest knowledge and research in their industry is important for any successful organisation. This is particularly true of those who are responsible for the care of vulnerable members of the community. 

Online learning resources, such as those Aged Care Learning Solutions has prepared, are a great way for your organisation to meet the requirements of the new standards, and for ongoing professional development (Log in to view of you have a Go1 Premium portal). With online resources, staff members can also study at their own pace - particularly useful when staff spend the majority of their working day interacting with consumers.  

2. What systems are in place to help prevent high-impact or high-prevalence risks for consumers? (Requirement 3b)

Meeting this requirement comes back to ensuring your assessment and planning systems are rigorous. Assessment for risk should take place regularly in consultation with the consumer. For example, if there is a risk for choking, the consumer’s care plan must include detailed information for ways to reduce the risk based on best practice and strictly followed by all involved in their care. 

3. How does your organisation evaluate and review end of life services to meet the needs and preferences of consumers? (Requirement 3c)

This requirement focuses on personal and clinical care at the end of a consumer’s life. It is important to understand that dying and death are a part of the human experience, not a medical event. Where the consumer is experiencing physical, psychological or spiritual distress, there needs to be a timely response to limit suffering and ensure the consumer’s dignity is maintained. 

4. How can consumers, the workforce and others improve early recognition to deterioration or loss in a consumer’s health or function? (Requirement 3d)

Where consumers experience health conditions or impairments which limit their ability to complete daily activities, changes to their situation or a deterioration both need to be recognised as quickly as possible. Early recognition could improve or reverse loss of function, or ensure that a higher level of ongoing care is put in place in a timely manner. 

It is important to note that how these conditions or impairments might restrict the consumer will depend on the individual and the environment they are living in. Each consumer should be treated as an individual, and staff members should avoid making generalisations when providing care. 

5. How is the sharing and management of information optimised?(3e)

Effective and practical processes for communicating information and record keeping is fundamental to consumers getting the best care and services for their needs, wants, goals and preferences.  Good information systems result in the people having all and current information to respond to consumer’s present needs. When changes happen the information must be updated and freshly communicated.

6. How does your organisation ensure timely and appropriate referrals? (3f)

Many consumers will have complex care needs or specific needs requiring a range of external and specialist service delivery. Once needs are determined with the full involvement of the consumer plans should be made to provide timely access to the services best suited to meet their needs. Organisations will benefit from have well developed networks with others so the many and varies needs of consumers can be met.

7. What level of attention has been given to the minimisation of infection related risks? (3G)   

The minimisation of infection related risk holds great levity as older people are extremely vulnerable. Morbidity and mortality rates are high when they acquire an infection and if the treatment is not appropriate.

Diligent standard infection control measures and extra precautions along with hand hygiene are the cornerstones of infection prevention.

The excessive use of antimicrobials including antibiotics is prevalent amongst older people and the impact of an antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infection poses a great risk to their safety and wellbeing. Antimicrobial stewardship many be a new concept for some organisations so it imperative your staff have the knowledge they need and the systems are in place to deliver good and safe use of antimicrobials.
