Go1 Co-Founder and Head of Growth Vu Tran recently presented at DisruptHR Brisbane 2.0 – an international event that gets people thinking differently about people, performance and culture.

Held at the Brisbane Powerhouse, the event saw a collection of speakers take the stage, with just five minutes each to ignite the room with their fresh ideas.

Throughout the night, CEOs, business leaders and HR professionals talked about new ideas and ways to transform their businesses and support their people.

DisruptHR: Go1's Vu Tran on 'The Future of Learning'

As way to allow each of the team to have more time to work on their ideas and produce more extensive results to pitch to our panel of judges, the 2017 was run over 2 weeks, with the first night designated for forming teams and starting work on their learning solution, and the second night - 7 days after forming teams, finalizing their presentation and presenting to the judges.

This also allowed teams to meet up throughout the week to refine their solutions.

Participants were split up into teams based on their learning background so all teams had diverse skill sets and background knowledge that could be used to tackle our challenge.

Teams were then presented with some drab and dry learning content on cyber security, with their task being to convert the material into an engaging and successful learning experience. This could come to life in many forms, such as a gamified learning structure, a blended learning environment, a self-paced elearning, or even something as simple as a job aid.

They were also given the criteria on which they would be assessed including:

· Engagement (how much does it draw in the learner?)
· Effectiveness (how likely will it solve the problem?)
· Scalability (high touch point with low operational cost)
· Success metrics (how success will be measured?)

Our panel of industry experts who would be judging the solutions included Jenny Blackburn, Director of Technology People & Leadership at Salesforce, Rich Taylor, head of Learning & Development at Palo Alto networks and, B.J. Schone, Sr. Manager of Sales Learning & Technology at Autodesk.

With eight teams of between four and six members tacking the challenge, we saw some amazing ideas coming to life over the two nights, and you can watch all the full video of all of our teams pitching below.

BALDT 2017 Learning Hackathon Pitch Night

All teams delivered amazing pitches to a great crowd of not only attendees, but our judges and a large group of additional attendees who had come down just to watch Pitch Night. After narrowing the field down to a top 3, and a length break for discussion between the judges, it was the team of Ryan Richardson, Kelly Reed and Davie Sy who came out as winners.

Congratulations Ryan, Kelly and Davie! They presented a great learning solution which clearly defined their all elements outlined in the judging criteria, including some creative ways to deliver and track training, as well as a very impressive rollout and tracking system that would lead to a successful roll out.

As the winners of the 2017 Learning Design Hackathon, Ryan, Kelly and Davie took home a $250 gift card thanks to Walmart.com, which they have very kindly donated to a local charity.

After running a successful hackathon event last year, this year the Bay Area Learning Design & Technology Meetup team expanded on their hackathon concept from the year by introducing a new format that would allow teams to have more time to prepare their project for presentation.

During September we teamed up with General Assembly to run events in Sydney and Melbourne to discuss 'The Future of Learning'. Both events had great turnouts, and a very lively conversation between panelists and attendees around a number of topics relating to how we see education evolving over the coming years.

Our Sydney event involved a great group of panelist including Dan Fish from Go1, Riley Batchelor of Edugrowth, independent learning consultant Bronwyn Stucky, while our Melbourne event included Will Dayble of Fitzroy Academy, Sarah Moran of Girl Geek Academy and Luke McInnes of BSchool, with both events moderated by Andrew Barnes, CEO of Go1.

In a great discussion across both cities, our panelist discussed a range of topics including traditional education vs online learning vs on the job learning, if traditional learning subjects are thing of the past, why Blended learning (and social elements) are so important, how people want to learn, and much more.

General Assembly's  Garry Williams had the following to say about the events:

"Education, or rather, the future state of educational opportunities and what the ideal method of education can be, is and always will be a rather contentious issue. During the event, the audience were quite animated on topics ranging from financial considerations, the need for recognised certifications, jobs of the future and studying passion areas vs what looks good on a resume.

Of course, being quite a passionate audience meant that there were some differences of opinion on where education is heading for the ourselves and the next generations coming through the ranks, but what was most appealing was the consensus that there has never been more availability of resources to be able to educate oneself. 

The integration of future technologies such as VR/ AR and Artificial Intelligence means that we are on the cusp of a really interesting time in our lives to see technology integrate into the in-person learning experience in particular, and online learning enables amazing access points for many people operating out of remote areas in particular."

What we learned at our Future of Learning events!

General Assembly are known as leaders in education and providing the highly sought after skills needed to make carve out a career in the modern workforce. As individuals and companies can struggle to compete in an increasingly technological world, General Assembly have managed to bridge the gap between the learners and skills.

In the lead up to the events we sat down with Garry Williams from Partnerships at General Assembly to learn more about the learning culture of the company, processes they have in place to utilize the talent within their team, and what they have learned about how people want to learn after running hundreds of events every year.

Blended learning is a key part of the education process for General Assembly.  Garry tells us that the learning culture is very hands on, but it allows members of their team to learn from their colleagues who have got backgrounds working with some of the biggest names in technology before arriving at GA. In order to keep up to date with current trends, GA lean heavily on their peep to peer programs to educate their team, in tandem with online offerings.

“There are many things to gain by complementing something like GA or Go1, with in-house experience” 

GA also runs a range of workshops every week which could cover everything from search engine optimization, to PR and gamification to ensure that their employees have the information that they need to succeed in their role.

A key aspect of how GA manages their learning is through their worldwide community, and communicating with their teams across the world to ensure that everyone is working together and sharing resources, or in some case, people as they travel between offices.

Having recently experienced the GA onboarding program, Gary says that there is a relatively intensive onboarding program in place for new team members, but the program utilizes skills of new hires that may have been over looked in the past. Moving from the corporate world into the startup scene, Garry notes that it was a challenging change of direction, however a lot of his skills crossed over and he was able to demonstrate that he was the right person for the role.

Running so many events give the GA a real insight into how attendees like to learn. When talking about how people love to learn at their events Garry, says that the top three reasons that people attend are to:

Feed off the knowledge being presented, and those in attendance through networking.

Explore their passions. They may not be in the career that they would like learn more about a subject and be involved with the community surrounding it so they can work towards making a switch into that profession.

Learn more about what is happening in the community. What are other companies doing, and what are they working on. This encourages people to push their own boundaries and develop new and exciting concepts.

When it comes to his own learning, Garry tells us that he enjoys keeping up to date with email newsletters from a select group of trusted writers who may only release new material every few weeks, even though he admits “it’s a bit of a nightmare for my inbox.”

“The common theme between all of the best material I receive is that they are all willing to share their content, but having something like Go1 is also very valuable for helping me quickly and easily learn new skills. “  

“There’s never been a more accessible time to learn. “

Interview: why learning culture and community are a priority at General Assembly

Being able to support a good cause is something that everyone at Go1 loves to be involved with, and being able to support Heart Research is no exception.

The beneficiary of the event will be Heart Research Australia who funds pioneering first-stage research that aims to identify innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease – Australia’s biggest killer.  Right now, 1.4 million Australians are living with heart disease, and each year more than 55,000 Australians suffer a heart attack – We are out to change that!

Go1 CEO Andrew Barnes was recently invited to DrupalGov Canberra 2016 where he spoke about how to use Drupal for learning management. DrupalGov is an organization promoting Drupal in the public sector, founded in 2013. They help passionate public-sector communities create opportunities for learning, networking and sharing their knowledge and experience with Drupal.

Having worked with the product since Drupal 4.6, Andrew and the Go1 team have been making some great advancements using the Drupal over many years. Throughout the presentation Andrew discusses a range of topic relating to using Drupal in Learning Management including the importance of learning, curating content, advantages of fostering a learning environment, H5P and new interactive learning experiences, assessing competency and much more.
