The business world changes almost daily. With increasing customer demand, many organizations struggle to keep up with production, customer service, technical support, billing, and more. With little if any time to provide employees with training, a lot of businesses have turned to technology. Although new software and hardware programs help, the fact is they often serve as more as a babysitter than actually teaching workers to become proficient in their jobs.

Although state-of-the-art technology will always play a vital role in virtually every business, training is just as critical, if not more so. If you own a company, it is essential that you recognize the value of in-person and online training, not just for your current employees, but also for contractors and new hires. You will find that quality training improves the overall operations of your business.

Even with increasing automation and artificial intelligence, technology will and should never replace training. As former US President Barack Obama once said, “If there is no offline interaction, mere online engagement is probably going to be a failure.”

Critical thinking is a significant part of training. Along with gaining knowledge, your employees will learn how to better understand strategies, communications, processes, and more. When you provide an in-person training program, the instructors can carefully observe the body language and facial expressions of your employees. With that, they have the opportunity to fine-tune their teaching methods to garner more interest and interaction.

In-person training also makes it possible for instructors and employees to have open and honest conversations. If someone does not understand a specific point, that person can sit down one-on-one with the teacher to get a better handle on the topic. Technology simply cannot beat hands-on experience.

As part of your in-person training courses, the instructors can teach your employees soft skills. In comparison, technology teaches hard skills. That means that things like creativity, empathy, and emotional intelligence, all intangible skills, come from in-person training as opposed to technology. At that same time, your instructors can teach skills that people should use every day on the job like respect, compassion, generosity, and so on.

While many online training courses do a great job of educating people, even they cannot always replace in-person training. The instructors at your business have the ability to convert information into knowledge that your workers can apply to their jobs. In addition to becoming more efficient, this prepares them to advance in their careers.

Something else to consider about in-person training is that it is engaging, whereas technology is not. Sure, some computer programs are fun and interesting to use, but they will never offer the same human interaction that makes in-person training so vital.

As a business owner, you need to think outside the box when it comes to employee education. Yes, automation and artificial intelligence have a role to play, and an important one at that. However, both in-person and online training are also critical components of your company’s success. With everything combined, the sky is the limit for your business.

Keep in mind that trained workers have more sense of pride in their performance. For that reason, they tend to work harder and achieve better results. In exchange for that, your customers will receive enhanced service and support, which increases their satisfaction in doing business with your company. Ultimately, your business experiences growth from both a size and financial perspective.

What it comes down to is this: There is no technology in existence, nor will there ever be, that can replace the value that in-person trainers and online training courses provide. No matter the size of your company, its industry, or the number of employees you have, you should create a training program for them, you, and your business.

Just make sure that you offer training sessions that cover the right topics and that your workers find enjoyable to attend. You want instructors who make education fun yet informative. The goal is to empower the people who work for you so they can be more efficient and productive in their respective roles.

We live in a world now where everyone expects everyone else and everything to be fast. From fast internet connection and fast moving queues to fast speed to market and fast turnaround on investment, we want fast to be faster. In the context of product innovation in business, everyone knows that not moving fast enough spells death. However, the rate at which we innovate on existing products, for instance by pushing out new features faster, is just one side of the innovation coin. It is important to appreciate that, some times, in order to create good and wholesome things, patience is required.

The analogy that I like to use is that product innovation is a 2-lane affair. The lanes represent the two primary types of innovation – incremental and the non-incremental ones. They both have different roles to play to sustain and advance a business. There is the life on the fast lane, where improvements to different aspects of existing products or introduction of new features take place. Speed is of the essence here or the products risk falling behind. Most companies already have proper processes, resourcing and training in place to speed through the fast lane. The innovation that happens on this lane is referred to as incrementalor sustaining.

There are many examples of this type of innovation across a range of industries, from FMCG businesses producing physical goods to online media or technology companies offering search services to connect customers and providers. An example in the consumer goods space is the continual extension to the line of soft drinks bearing the Coca-Cola brand. Together, products such as Vanilla Coke and Coke No Sugar have enabled a 130-year old brand to tap into emerging trends and bring something new to its existing customers over the years. In the case of Go1, its search products undergo continuous improvement following the approach described in my other blog post to make the results that they produce for the users increasingly more relevant.

The reality is you can only go so far by being faster, cheaper or tastier before you hit the end of the runway. In other words, innovation beyond the incremental is required for companies to remain competitive over the long run. It is definitely the case of disrupt or be disrupted. This is when the second lane comes in, for innovation beyond the incremental ones. This type of innovation can range from solving an existing problem differently to offering solutions to problems that users do not even know exist. The different terms used to describe this type of innovation include breakthrough, radical and disruptive. Some of these labels have more nuanced usage, as in the case of disruptive innovation in the book Innovator’s Dilemma.

More often than not, the initiatives travelling on the slow lane are few and far between. According to some sources, around 70% of innovation is incremental in nature. As for the rest on the slow lane, we hear companies lament about their inability to translate the more ‘absurd’ ideas into the next big things that can propel them ahead of competition. The common excuses are around the distraction of day-to-day business activities which take attention, time and resources away from this type of innovation.

The fact that companies claim they struggle to innovate beyond incremental using the existing setup and processes is an indicator that we need something more. But the question is what? The right kind of thought process, approach to collaboration and leadership are some of the key ingredients. With proper training and other forms of support in place, I have seen businesses move the dial on innovation. We will cover the 3 critical pillars to foster and sustain breakthrough innovation in detail through the lens of my experiences across a range of roles in the next blog post

These days, employees have far higher expectations of corporate training programs than in the past. L&D professionals are recognising that staff want learning materials that are easy to access, relevant, up-to-date, and engaging.

That’s why it’s a good idea to include curated external content in your organisation’s learning program, to help employees engage with training content, as well as encouraging a more effective learning culture.

When we talk about external content, we’re referring to material that has been created by a third party.

There’s no doubt that using this kind of content can help to support corporate training, while bringing a number of benefits to your employees and your business.

By including curated external content in your learning materials, you’re not replacing your original content – you’re simply adding to it. And this way, you’ll be offering staff better content, which will help improve collaboration, knowledge sharing and innovation across the business.

Using content curation for learning programs

First, some important words about content curation.

Asha Pandey, Chief Learning Strategist at EI Design, agrees that companies should be using content curation to support their corporate training. Pandey defines content curation as “an exercise to continually find, filter (group, organize), and share the most relevant content on specific topics and offer it to learners as an online tool or through a portal or platform.”

Finding the best content from multiple sources, either from your existing knowledge base or external sources

Filtering, so only the most relevant content makes it through

Sharing it with the right audiences, at the right time, through the right platform

Adding value to that content with commentary, context or organization

In this way, as Pandey says, content curation “gathers and organizes all online and offline resources available in your network and allows learners to access them all on a single platform.”

Social media is great, as it allows us the opportunity to share third-party content, while crediting the original owner. Choosing to share other people’s content can be a good move, reducing the focus on talking about your own company and its achievements all the time. It also allows you to add your own commentary and ‘voice’ to external content, explaining its relevance for your own target audience.

In a previous Go1 article, we’ve looked at how to create eLearning content. As we said then, “with so many competitors out there, your content creation needs to shine. Do this by including a selection of media sources to give your course high-quality sheen.”

Videos – Videos are easy enough to find across the web. The obvious resources here are YouTube and Vimeo, with the latter tending to have fewer videos but being of higher quality formatting. These two sites can easily be embedded into your course using your authoring tool.

Images – Public domain images are often a treasure trove for you to rummage among. The obvious websites here are Pexels, Shutterstock, Flickr, and Pixabay. Just make sure that the images you select are in the public domain, not private. The websites have filters to easily allow you to check this.

Graphics – For the easy use of figures and stats, try Canva or Piktochart. Graphics and infographics are an ideal way to easily visualize key figures in a lesson.

Collating curated external content for learners

With content curation, your chosen platform will collate content for your staff. Meaning there’s no need for trawling through separate intranets, web portals and discussion boards – everything they need to know will be all in one place. This helps individuals feel empowered with the content, as they can choose which information they want to be engaged with.

As your content will be carefully filtered, you know that you’ll be delivering focused information that applies directly to your audience’s learning needs. Employees have the opportunity to share content, as well as contribute to the platform, meaning there’s potential for continual sharing and value enhancement.

Using the one single platform for your content means that all information will be safely housed for long-term use, as well as easily accessible to staff at any time. Content curation can save workers significant time, helping to improve company productivity and results.

Prior to reading this article, your first association with VR headsets might have been to gaming or you might have related smartwatches primarily to fitness training. However, as you can see, these innovations are finding entirely new purposes in the business world. Wearable tech relies immensely on the simplicity of its usage. In addition, by making it a part of employee training, you could provide learning that is not limited by time or space, which opens a world of possibilities. If implemented correctly, it could take your business to a whole new level.

Now that you know how wearable tech can generally be of use to your business, here are a few devices that show the most promise in employee training and engagement right now. 

VR - or Virtual Reality - headsets are on the cutting edge of wearable tech. They are what allows your employees to become fully immersed in a fully realistic experience or exchange. This includes things like the employee's level of attention to the client and whether or not they make direct eye contact or when they become distracted while driving. This data can help trainers offer important feedback directly related to the trainee's actions and interactions.

Smartwatches are the most readily available wearable tech, but they are also the most limited in terms of tailored learning programs. However, they are the least distracting and show the most potential for providing real-time access to critical information while still keeping an employee's hands free for other things. While VR Goggles or even Google Glass Headsets make for a great training experience, smartwatches make the best transition from the training room to the real world.

These are just three of the wearable tech products currently available and some of the potential uses for them. There are a wide range of products currently in development however, many of which may make a better transition from the training room to the real world. Even the tech that exists right now, however, is making for a better, more immersive training experience, which helps both employees and employers.
