Plus, let's face it—a burnt-out employee isn’t likely to spend their time and energy on learning and development.

This focus on mental health isn't simply a fad or a phase—it's the result of a workplace culture that has gone too far and must now self-correct to regain balance. 

In this article, we'll unpack the relationship between mental health and productivity, and provide strategies to help your organization foster a supportive environment that values the whole person, leading to a more motivated, engaged, and ultimately productive workforce. 

The link between productivity and mental health is complex. When people are stressed and overworked, they're not at their best, and burnout becomes a real risk—but this doesn’t mean you should stop working toward a more productive workforce altogether. Instead, it's important to prioritize your workforce’s mental well-being so you can form realistic expectations of your employees. 

Often, companies treat employee well-being more as a nice-to-have than a need-to-have for their business success. However, there's plenty of evidence showing that happy, mentally healthy employees perform better. In fact, research shows that happy workers are 13% more productive than unhappy workers. Fast Company even concludes that because of this, happiness should be a KPI for all businesses.  

So, how can you create a work environment that's good for mental health and simultaneously keeps productivity high? If you're truly committed to making mental wellness a part of company culture, then it can't be an afterthought. It's important to build a structured approach that is both thorough and inclusive. Here are three strategies you can implement within your mental health framework: 
 

Leadership is the backbone of organizational culture. If your organization's leaders don't prioritize a healthy work-life balance for themselves, then it's likely their direct reports won't either, and this attitude will continue to travel throughout the company. It's vital that leadership embodies the values they want their teams to practice. When leaders actively promote and model healthy boundaries, it sets the tone for the rest of the organization, making it easier for employees to prioritize self-care without fear of being stigmatized or penalized. 

Buy-in from leadership is a necessary step for any mental wellness program to succeed. Instituting a well-thought-out mental health policy that leadership promotes and advocates for signals to employees that their mental well-being is a priority. This should be backed by clear communication that encourages the use of mental health resources and destigmatizes seeking help. 

When we consider leadership’s role in mental well-being, we don’t just mean your organization’s C-suite. A recent study by UKG found that managers have a higher impact on employees’ mental health than doctors or therapists—and that they have the same impact as a spouse or partner! As key role models with significant impact, it’s important that managers are trained to cultivate a supportive relationship with their team by celebrating employee accomplishments and creating a space to openly discuss work challenges and stressors. This shift can help employees feel like their relationship with their manager is an ongoing opportunity for growth, not a constant critique. 

Integrating mindfulness techniques into daily work can have a profound positive impact on stress levels. Mindfulness helps individuals to be fully present and engaged in the task at hand, ultimately leading to better performance. But what does mindfulness look like at work? 

Building mental health policies may not be the most exciting task, but implementing mindfulness practices is a great place to get creative and have fun! Consider offering all-company workshops or team sessions to introduce your workforce to various mindfulness techniques, building their resilience to stress and enhancing their ability to focus. You might host a yoga class or breathwork session, or add weekly guided meditations to the calendar.

During the session, Vu shared his thoughts on resilience, his frameworks around understanding the basics of mental health, and answered questions about mental wellness. In a post-pandemic world, remote and hybrid work has become the norm for many employees, and the blurring of work-life boundaries is real. Providing guidelines for remote work that encourage time management, regular breaks, and the cultivation of a dedicated workspace can help prevent burnout. 

Flexibility is also key, as flexible working hours and locations can empower employees to structure their workday in a way that best supports their personal responsibilities and mental health needs. A survey from Gartner found that 43% of respondents said flexible working hours helped them achieve greater productivity. Providing flexibility and access to mental health resources such as counseling services or employee assistance programs can help employees feel supported and cared for. 

Our collective knowledge about mental health is constantly evolving, and just like we expect employees to adapt to change, organizations should also adapt to meet the changing needs of their workforce. By adopting a holistic approach that looks at both individual and organizational factors, companies can create a work environment that nurtures the well-being and success of their most valuable asset—their employees. 

Strategically investing in mental wellness pays off in employee satisfaction, commitment, and performance. It's time to shift the paradigm from a productivity-at-all-costs mentality to a sustainable, wellness-focused approach that benefits everyone.

For over 25 years, GT’s Living Foods (responsible for that Synergy Kombucha you know and love) has revolutionized how we integrate fermented foods into our lives, spreading the message that food can be medicine. As a company centered around growth with purpose, GT’s recently applied these same values to learning internally. Through the work of a small but mighty Talent Management team, they set out to improve their learning and development output, and Go1 was ready to help with a new partnership. 

Ever since, the results have been outstanding. From a 3x increase in active learners to boosting engagement, developing leaders, and staying compliant, we’ll share every step of GT’s L&D transformation.  

Building a thriving L&D program from scratch  

Before 2019, formal L&D didn’t exist at GT’s Living Foods. They realized it was time for a change and hired a VP of HR. By 2022, that had evolved into a one-person L&D team, consisting of powerhouse Sindy Ruiz, Talent Management Business Partner.  

However, this small team doesn’t stop Sindy from having a massive impact. The same year Sindy joined, GT’s partnered with their first content aggregator, OpenSesame. Within that year, their expectations weren’t being met, and they switched to Go1. 

“The reason why we went with Go1 instead was because of that multiple-course functionality,” Sindy explains.  

“Having employees be able to search their own courses (from a large library) was a huge selling point since we were so accustomed to having to curate content ourselves.”   

Whereas with OpenSesame, Sindy could select just 25 courses to cover the whole business, with Go1, she has access to the entire content library of 85,000+ courses.  

“85,000 courses is hard to beat. That's a lot of content,” Sindy enthused.  

This switch allowed GT’s to kick their L&D efforts into overdrive, delivering more personalized, targeted training. Of course, during the switch, proving value to senior leaders proved tricky—a familiar obstacle for many L&D teams, but patience and partnership led to success.  

“Getting everyone accustomed to a new platform is always difficult, plus making sure that the leadership team saw the value in it,” Sindy said. 

“Luckily, the second year showed much improvement, and our learners now feel comfortable using the platform.”  

Ever since, the results speak for themselves. Demand for learning has increased steadily, with active learners increasing by 3x—from just a handful initially to over 300 active learners today. 

“Since last year, we've become kind of hyper-focused on training and development, learning, and closing skill gaps,” Sindy added. 

Instituting a culture of learning through GT's University 

With their L&D team established, a partnership with Go1 in place, and more demand for learning than ever, it was time for GT’s to take the next step. So, they established GT’s University.  

 “[Employees] already know, whatever I'm looking for, GT’s University is the place to go,” Sindy explained.  

This structure has transformed GT’s approach to leadership training. Sindy explains that previously, they had issues with leaders being promoted without the proper training or skills. New leaders didn’t have the time or resources to proactively train employees or anticipate skill gaps. Now, Sindy ensures that “managers are learning to be managers [sometimes] working backward and also implementing training ahead of time.” 

The need for proper training and anticipating skill gaps is crucial for all employees and applies to individual contributors too. GT’s data showed that one of the main reasons people quit was a lack of career advancement opportunities—employees felt like they were stagnating. So, they set about fixing this. 

“We wanted to make sure that for the people that don't necessarily want to be promoted [but] want to know how to do their job better or grow within their actual current job, we also wanted to target them," Sindy recalls.  

Additionally, this proactivity has helped the company stay on top of its compliance requirements.  

“It also allows us to get ahead before we fall out of compliance, which is really nice, because before we were always playing catch up,” Sindy notes.  

Along with compliance and industry-specific training, Sindy says their most popular searches are for communication, leadership training, conflict management, and teamwork. These types of courses are where she has noticed the greatest behavioral change, as employees are now willing to complete non-mandatory training to close skill gaps or prepare for career moves. 

She attributes this change in learner attitudes to Go1’s ease-of-use, sharing that “every time you update the platform and make it more user-friendly it makes it easier for us to push that message too, because now [employees] don't have to figure out a complicated tool.” 

As interest in learning has grown, GT’s learning goals have become increasingly ambitious. Currently, that involves gamifying learning and rolling out Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to learners on their admin side.  

So far, most of their L&D efforts have centered on the production side of the business, which houses approximately 800 of GT’s 1,000 employees. However, Sindy is now turning her attention to the remaining 200 employees on the admin side. 

“We're going to be focusing heavily this year on individual development plans, and Go1 is going to be the top hitter to help us with that, because part of the individual development plan is to go and develop or learn something on your own,” Sindy says.  

On top of rolling out these IDPs, GT’s have also focused on gamifying learning to make it more engaging. So far, they have been announcing top Learners of the Month, and recently launched a monthly raffle with gift card prizes for employees who complete the designated monthly courses.  

Advice from GT’s Living Foods for L&D teams 

Building a successful L&D program from scratch is never easy—as Sindy has learned firsthand. So, what advice would she offer? 

“Make it a more fun experience to learn,” she says. “When employees see we are willing to invest in their growth, they want to stay with us until they are no longer growing.”  

On top of this, she adds that the breadth of content Go1 provides has made her life as an L&D professional much easier.  

“Go use [Go1]! There is so much available, we have yet to find a gap with learning content for both English and Spanish for our entire team…the platform and integration with WorkRamp has made it extremely easy for our team to learn how to use and digest content in a self-enrolled way,” she said.  

“Use it and abuse it. There is so much content to take advantage of, help it help you gain the skillset you either lack or would like to improve on.”

Picture this: you’ve worked 40 long and rewarding years at the same company. To celebrate this dedication, you’re gifted a beautiful gold watch at your retirement party before riding ininto the sunset to explore the world with nothing holding you back. Maybe your grandparents told you a similar story, or you saw something like this happen on TV. However, today’s fast-paced workplace has passed this tradition by.  

Never mind 40 years at the same company and a gold watch, these days, the average worker has 13 jobs throughout their career, lasting a little over four years apiece. This constant change makes finding purpose and building a fulfilling career in the modern workplace challenging, to say the least.  

In fact, 69% of employees would change roles for better job fulfillment, while a third would take a lower-paying job if it were more fulfilling. While providing a fulfilling workplace should be its own reward, from a purely business perspective, it’s also beneficial, as purpose-driven companies have 40% higher retention rates.

Finding purpose through self-discovery  

The journey to a fulfilling career starts with self-discovery. It may sound cliche, but you're unlikely to find purpose and fulfillment in your job without first looking inward. We recommend starting this process with a reflective question: do you work to live or live to work? Your answer will likely inform the rest of your journey.  

Depending on your goals and personality, this process could involve anything from self-reflection on whether you’re in a role and industry that suits your disposition to self-care or reading job boards and descriptions to find roles that align with your goals. For example, if you’re the quiet, shy type, you’re unlikely to find fulfillment working in a noisy call center.   

Whatever path you take, self-discovery involves delving into one’s values, interests, strengths, and passions. One popular technique is the “Ikigai” framework, which is rooted in Japanese philosophy and recommends a holistic approach to finding purpose and fulfillment. This technique encourages people to reflect on four key elements: 

By identifying the intersection of these aspects, known as one’s “Ikigai,” you can pursue a career path aligned with your deepest passions and values.   

Additionally, personality assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or the Big Five personality traits can offer insights into individual preferences and tendencies, guiding career decisions. While the scientific validity of such assessments is debatable, they remain popular as a general tool, particularly in the corporate world, where 89 Fortune 100 companies use them for hiring, team building, and talent management. These assessments can help people understand how they fit in, interact with others, and approach various aspects of their lives. By leveraging this self-awareness, people can make informed, purposeful decisions about their career paths.

Once you’ve reflected on your values and aspirations, the next step is to set meaningful career goals. The PACT goal-setting framework — purposeful, actionable, continuous, and trackable — provides a structured starting point for goal setting. By following this approach, individuals can set meaningful objectives aligned with their purpose, maintain momentum through continuous improvement, and effectively monitor progress to stay on course. 

Accordingly, it's no surprise that there's a wealth of benefits to goal-setting. Employees who regularly set goals are:   

3.6x more likely to be committed to their organization  

6.7x more likely to feel proud of their organization  

6.5x more likely to recommend their organization as a great place to work  

6.5x more likely to say their workplace lets them master necessary skills  

7.7x more likely to say their employer gives them opportunities to develop their skills  

Goal-setting benefits employees and the business but can be deceptively difficult. Just 6% of companies set aligned goals and regularly revisit them, while fewer than 20% accurately track their goals.   

To avoid these pitfalls, remember these goal-setting tips. First, write your goals down! It sounds so simple, but estimates suggest just 16% of people write down their goals every time, even though writing down your goals makes you 42% more likely to succeed!   

Further, setting goals isn’t a one-time event; it’s an ongoing process of refinement and adjustment. As you grow and evolve in your career, your priorities may shift, and new opportunities may arise. Therefore, it’s essential to regularly revisit and reassess your goals to ensure they're still relevant and aligned with your career path. We recommend reviewing your personal career goals every six months. Your role-specific goals quarterly, and, if you’re overseeing a team, review your organizationally driven goals each month to refresh and reset. 

Involving others in the goal-setting process can also provide support and accountability, as people who set time-bound goals and report progress to their peers increase their chance of success by 40%. Whether you’re seeking feedback from mentors or collaborating with colleagues on shared objectives, leveraging others’ expertise can make your goals more effective. Together with an accountability partner, you can brainstorm creative solutions, overcome obstacles, and celebrate successes, fostering a feeling of collective achievement.  

With clear goals established, you should have a great start to developing a career plan. From there, crafting a career plan involves mapping out your goals by identifying specific actions, resources, and timelines needed. This process could require you to gain new skills through education or training, seek mentorship or networking opportunities, or pursue relevant experiences or projects.  

A recent survey by IBM confirms the importance of career planning, finding that employees ranked career advancement opportunities (43%) — like career planning — higher than compensation and benefits (41%). That’s right, employees ranked career advancement above pay — that’s how important it is. 

Try to remain flexible and adaptable as career paths often evolve. Combining self-reflection, strategic thinking, and proactive action can create a career plan that paves the way for a fulfilling, successful professional journey.

However, our best advice to help you get started is to discuss this with your manager during your next performance review or 1:1 meeting. This integration is poised to transform how organizations curate, manage, and track their learning content in the Workday ecosystem, empowering L&D professionals to seamlessly integrate content management and track learner progress in real time.  

Content management is easier than ever  

For L&D professionals, staying ahead of the curve is essential. With the Go1 and Workday Cloud Connect Integration, L&D teams will gain access to a powerful toolset that simplifies the content management process. Key features include:   

Streamlined content management: Easily import, update, and deactivate learning content from the Go1 catalog directly into the Workday ecosystem. 

Instant learner progress tracking: Workday uses xAPI and webhook technology for real-time tracking, offering immediate insights into learner engagement and compliance. 

Enhanced learning experiences: Merge Go1's vast content library with Workday to deliver personalized learning experiences that fuel continuous development. 

The integration uses a sync of an employee’s curated catalog from the Go1 library, making it easy to import into the Workday ecosystem. Then, customers can complete their curation and synchronize their selections with just a few clicks. Once synchronized, the Workday integration retrieves course metadata and dynamically creates, updates, or deactivates content in the customer's Workday tenant to align with their latest selections. 

Another standout feature of this integration is real-time course completion tracking, ensuring enrollment activity is accurately represented in real time. This real-time tracking is enabled by xAPI and webhook technology, giving organizations clear visibility into learner progress and engagement. 

Currently, estimates suggest 83% of L&D teams track course completion data in some way (although, generally, not in real-time). While this is certainly a large percentage, we think it should be closer to 100%, as course completion tracking is vital for many reasons. For instance, according to Training Industry, 51% of L&D professionals can’t use data effectively due to a lack of in-house data skills. Having reliable access to real time data and analytics will help L&D teams redress this issue.  

What’s more, tracking learner progress is a great way to help L&D teams prove ROI. 1 in 5 L&D teams say ‘a lack of quality data collection’ is an impediment to their ability to demonstrate ROI. On the other hand, organizations with solid data literacy outperform competitors by 5%. Clear, real-time learner tracking is a great way to hone your data literacy and start proving ROI!

This should take no more than 24 hours. Following this, for customers with an existing Cloud Connect subscription, simply enter your OAuth client credentials from the Go1 portal to log in. From there, mapping options are available to tailor the integration to your organizational needs, ensuring a customized, uniform learning experience for all users.  

 1.  Activate the integration: Ask your CSM to reach out to the Go1 implementations team to configure and activate the integration.  

 2. Ensure Cloud Connect subscription: Confirm your organization has a valid Cloud Connect subscription with Workday. 

 3. Access integration settings: Log in to your Workday Instance and navigate to the integration settings section. 

 4. Enter credentials: Input your OAuth client credentials from the Go1 portal into the integration settings. 

 5. Configure mappings (optional): Customize the integration by configuring additional mappings to tailor it to your organization's unique needs. 

 6. Synchronize curated catalog: Once configured, the integration will automatically synchronize your curated catalog from Go1 to Workday. 

 7.  Explore learning resources: Gain instant access to a wealth of learning resources available through the integrated platform.

Welcome to an exciting new monthly Go1 blog series: what’s trending in learning? Keen-eyed readers might have formerly known this series as ‘The Content Insider’. We thought it was time for a refresh, so we’ve adjusted the format, and now we’re back, and better than ever. For long-time fans of the Content Insider: don’t fret! We’ve kept all the best bits while adding in a few more. You can’t have too much of a good thing, right? We’ll continue delivering the same essential information to ensure your L&D team runs smoothly, just in a shiny new format.  

In this debut edition, we’ll shine a spotlight on compliance and retention courses, before sharing the best new and returning content providers in the Go1 Library. So, what’s trending in learning this March? 

Topic spotlight: compliance and retention  

Every month, we’ll focus on a different L&D topic, recommending associated courses from the Go1 library. To kick things off, it’s a big one: compliance and retention. While we probably don’t need to tell you how important these topics are (very!), a quick reminder couldn’t hurt: 87% percent of HR leaders say their employee L&D program is critical to retaining talent.  

Here are five great courses on compliance, retention, and diversity to help you retain employees. Content varies from four minutes of microlearning to an in-depth, hour-long course — plus plenty in between to suit anyone’s training needs.  

1. Anti-Racism in the Workplace (CPD Certified) by iAM Learning (15 mins)  

Course description: You’ll learn to define racism, with an emphasis on anti-racism policies. You’ll also learn the primary forms racism takes in organizations and how to prevent it by suggesting areas where your organizational anti-racism strategy could improve.  

2. Maternal Wall Bias and the Motherhood Penalty by Emtrain (4 mins) 

 Course description: This skill-building lesson teaches you about the “maternal wall” bias, addressing how ideas of motherhood and gender roles create barriers to workplace advancement. This course will teach leaders how to provide flexibility and support employees after they become mothers. 

3. Unconscious Bias & Ageism by Maguire (30 mins)  

Course description: Recommended for managers who want to improve their communication and leadership skills and understand bias, this CPD-accredited module will teach you about unconscious bias, ageism, stereotypes, and social categorization, including how to spot these factors when recruiting.  

4. Managing compliance by Catalyst online learning portal (1hr)  

In this debut edition, we’ll shine a spotlight on compliance and retention courses, before sharing the best new and returning content providers in the Go1 Library.
